The Wayne County Fiscal Court met last night in a special called session to address a packed agenda ranging from the first reading of the next fiscal year’s budget to critical funding for public safety and community wellness programs.
A primary focus of the evening was the county’s financial planning. The Court held the first reading of the FY27 Budget Ordinance, marking a major step in establishing the county’s spending priorities for the upcoming year. Simultaneously, the Court finalized the current year’s financials by holding second readings for Budget Amendments 8 and 9 of FY26.
In routine business, the Court also approved recurring expenses, claims, and both intra-fund and inter-fund transfers to ensure continued operational stability.
The Court took steps to bolster local emergency services and drug abatement efforts:
Ambulance Financing: Following the previous month’s approval of a $157,626.62 bid for a Ford F350 4×4 ambulance remount, the Court discussed and moved forward with the financing details for the vehicle.
Opioid Abatement: Members reviewed and approved a $3,000 request from Operation UNITE / DAAD for community outreach, which includes “Spiritual First Aid” training to equip community leaders with tools to support individuals struggling with mental and emotional needs.
Detention Center Support: A separate abatement fund request of $1,500 was presented by the Detention Center to provide educational curriculum and incentives for justice-involved individuals, a program proven to reduce recidivism.
Youth Wellness: The Court reviewed a funding request for the RISE Mental Health and Wellness “GROWTH” summer program. The program, which serves children ages 6-12, requested $500 for therapeutic materials, including mental health workbooks and sensory tools.
Infrastructure remains a priority as the Court passed County Road Aid Cooperative Resolution 2026-05-001. This agreement with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet involves an estimated apportionment of $1,262,900.12 for the construction and maintenance of county roads and bridges for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026.
Approved the reappointments of Jacob Keeton and David Worley to the Airport Board.
Sponsored the Cumberland Elite High School Bass Fishing Team with $250 in ABC funds to support students Layne Hughes and Braiden Duncan as they compete in the National Championship this June.
Approved a $1,500 donation to the “Hooked on Fishing” program.
The meeting concluded with reports from various departments. Notably, the Detention Center updated the Court on a personnel change and presented a new policy regarding restraining devices
