(WAVE/WKYT) – Lawmakers are working to make railroad crossings safer in Kentucky.
The Kentucky House passed House Bill 311, which requires railroad companies to clear overgrown trees, plants, and brush within 250 feet of a crossing.
Tanya Serna has been fighting for legislation like this since April 2020.
Serna’s son, Hunter, was killed when a train hit the car he was in. It’s believed that overgrown trees prevented him from seeing that a train was coming.
The bill is now heading to the Senate.
Thirty-four other states have adopted similar bills to improve safety at railroad crossings.
