Lost hiker found by rescue crews in Red River Gorge

(WKYT) – Rescue crews from Powell and Wolfe counties teamed up to find a lost hiker in the Red River Gorge on Monday.

Wolfe County Search & Rescue was dispatched around 8 p.m. to an area near the Jobs Corp property and met up with Powell County Search & Rescue.

Due to poor cell phone reception, the hiker was unable to provide his location via a link by rescue crews, nor did he have any way to signal crews because his phone was dying.

Crews were unable to find the hiker after reaching the coordinates they were initially provided.

After breaking up into smaller teams, voice contact was made with the hiker along a cliff line along Indian Creek near Kelley Branch.

The hiker was uninjured and was safely escorted back to his vehicle.

Wolfe County Search & Rescue said the situation serves as a reminder that GPS coordinates and cellular location data are not always exact due to limited coverage in areas of the gorge.

It also reminded hikers to always carry a fully charged phone, a portable battery pack, a reliable flashlight or headlamp, and a whistle.
