Endometriosis Awareness Month: What women should know about a common but often missed condition

(WYMT) – March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, which aims to shed light on a women’s health condition that is frequently missed or misunderstood.

Doctors say endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, causing painful periods, pelvic pain, and pain during intercourse.

An OB-GYN at Hazard ARH says endometriosis affects one in eight women and is responsible for 40% of infertility cases.

Crystal Gibson, an OB-GYN and physician’s assistant at Hazard ARH, said the condition can be particularly difficult for women trying to start a family.

“It is a condition that a lot of women and a lot of young women struggle with and they don’t necessarily understand or know what’s going on,” Gibson said. “So it’s very disheartening when you’re trying to have a baby and start a family, but you’re having all this pain and others around you may not be doing that and you don’t know why.”

While there is no cure for endometriosis, treatments ranging from pain medication and hormone therapy to surgery can help manage symptoms.

Health experts say anyone experiencing similar symptoms should mention them to their provider.
