Cell phone towers hit by theft in southern Kentucky, cutting off service to some

(WKYT) – Thieves are targeting cell phone towers in Southern Pulaski County and other parts of the region, stealing copper wiring and communications equipment in a costly crime that impacts residents’ ability to call for help.

The thefts are dangerous for both the criminals and the public. Stealing communication wiring that contains copper can disable emergency services when people cannot reach 911.

“It’s a wonder that more people aren’t injured by this,” said Sgt. Cody Cundiff of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office. “So if they need an ambulance or law enforcement assistance, they are not able to get out of their places.”

Kentucky lawmakers recently passed a bill targeting scrap yards that purchase copper wiring or communications equipment from cell phone sites. Scrap yards that buy this material can now be charged through Kentucky courts. However, some scrap yards operate outside legal oversight.

AT&T has its own investigating team looking into the thefts. The company is currently offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

People who have information should call the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office at 606-678-5145.

The cost to repair damage from the thefts can exceed the reward amount. Beyond the financial impact, the thefts create safety risks if someone needs to make an emergency call and cannot, or if thieves are injured while trespassing on tower sites.

“People are really taking a heavy risk to their own life by doing so,” Cundiff said. “Because there is a lot of voltage that runs through that stuff.”

Police said damage at a site on Keno Road affected two other towers in addition to the targeted site. Local officials said they are not aware of any major widespread communication issues caused by the thefts.
