Somerset Man dead after attempt from police to serve warrants

(WKYT) – A Somerset man shot himself when officers tried to serve him two warrants, police say.

Wednesday night, around 9:30 p.m., Somerset police attempted to serve two Pulaski County District Court warrants for failing to appear in court on 55-year-old Matthew Shepherd.

When they arrived, Shepherd was refusing to exit the building, police say. A woman was also in the residence with him. According to authorities, she came out and informed them that Shepherd would be coming out with a gun.

After getting the woman to safety, police say they heard a gunshot from inside the home. They secured the area and deployed a drone into the home to search for answers.

They found Shepherd deceased with a single, assumedly self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials say. No shots were fired at officers, and none were fired at Shepherd, according to authorities. The woman at the residence was not injured, police say.
