Wayne County man wakes up after tree crashes through home

(WKYT) – Strong winds caused damage across Wayne County early Monday, including a tree that fell through the roof of a home while the resident was asleep inside.

The most severe damage was reported east of Monticello off Kentucky Highway 834, where a tree fell onto a home. Dylan Haste said he was asleep and did not hear the tree come down. His mother, who lives in a house behind his, heard a loud boom and called to wake him. Haste said he looked up and saw a tree branch close to where he had been sleeping, then discovered a hole and damage throughout his bedroom.

““Well, I knew it had to be the tree. I had them right directly behind me. I didn’t know it was this bad until the sun started coming up. I thought it might have been a small hole right in here, but this was through the closet. But no the worst part of it is right here,” said Haste.

Other damage reported across the county

Additional damage was reported throughout Wayne County, including numerous barns that were leveled and trees down in multiple locations.

Wayne County schools operated on a two-hour delay. A school bus was also temporarily blocked by low-hanging power lines before the fire department assisted and the bus was able to continue on its route. No injuries were reported.

Wayne County was under a tornado warning when the damage occurred. It has not been determined whether the damage was caused by an actual tornado.
