The Wayne County Fiscal Court met Thursday night for their regular June Meeting. The Court heard and approved the second reading of the FY 2026 budget which totals just over 18 million dollars. Some of the highlights include hazardous duty retirement for Sheriff’s Department, a new vehicle for the rescue squad, and cost of living increases for county employees.
The court approved using up to $9,000 if needed for a vest and equipment for a new K-9 officer for the sheriff’s department. Whatever amount that is used will come from the opioid abatement funds, as the K-9 will be used in both the D.A.R.E and DAAD programs.
Magistrate Jeff Dishman spoke regarding a question asked at the recent Monticello City Council Meeting about if the county is paying enough to the city for fire protection. Dishman noted that in addition to purchasing several pieces of equipment in recent years the county is contributing $100,000 annually to the department. It was also pointed out by Dishman that county residents are paying 34% more for water services through the Utility Commission than city residents.
In addition to a break down provided by Judge Executive Scott Gehring as to where portions of the county’s budget go to support city services, Magistrate Jonathan Dobbs suggested looking into the possibility of two magistrates being appointed to the utility commission board, as of right now the county has no representation.
