Preparing your plants for potential frost this weekend

(WKYT) – Temperatures might be pretty warm right now but believe it or not, frost is likely this weekend. This means for those summer plants, it’s about time to bring them inside.

“Any of your tender plants, I would recommend taking inside if you are able,” said Emily Woodward with the Sunshine Grow Shop.

Not all plants need to head inside or be covered up just yet.

The first frost of the season looks to arrive Saturday night into Sunday morning.

“If you have pansies, ornamental cabbage or kale, those guys can go into the 20s. I often times hear pansies will come back in the spring, so they are very cold tolerant. I’ve had ornamental cabbage and kale still look good in December,” said Woodward.

Another added element to this being the first time we get at or below freezing is the fact that it was nearly 90 degrees this week. This also creates shock to those summer plants.

“Plants will not be happy with that but again, that’s going to be more like your summer annuals, your indoor plants. That’s why if you have indoor plants like myself that are outside for the season and you’ve been late to bringing those in, now is the time to get those in,” said Woodward.
