(WKYT) – A Corbin woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a key witness tied to a high-profile human trafficking and organized crime case in southeastern Kentucky.
Officers with the Corbin Police Department, assisting the United States Marshals Service, arrested 22-year-old Hailey Gilbert on Friday, September 11. Authorities are charging her with complicity to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence.
The charges stem from an ongoing multi-agency investigation into the death of Bobby Smith, who was found deceased in late August. Investigators identified Smith as a key witness against his brother, 69-year-old Darrell Carnahan of Loyall in Harlan County.
Carnahan was previously arrested following a joint raid by federal and local law enforcement on charges that include human trafficking, engaging in organized crime, promoting prostitution, rape, sodomy, and multiple drug offenses.
Gilbert is the sixth person arrested in connection with the broader investigation, which includes four other suspects charged in relation to Smith’s death and another arrest tied to the original sex offenses case.
Gilbert is currently lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
