Severe thunderstorms swept through Kentucky yesterday afternoon and evening brining damaging winds, lightning, and heavy rain to the Lake Cumberland region, including Pulaski County and Somerset.
According to the Kentucky Public Service Commission, South Kentucky RECC reported widespread outages caused by downed lines and broken poles. As of 11:33 p.m. Tuesday, there were 2,872 customers without power in Pulaski County, 1,988 in Clinton County, and 56 in Wayne County, with crews working overnight to restore service. 7:30am ET Update: Our crews worked throughout the night restoring power following yesterday’s severe weather. Thanks to their efforts, approximately 432 members remain without service this morning, down from a peak of around 3500.
The Somerset and Parkers Mill Volunteer Fire Departments noted widespread storm damage around Slate Branch Road and Oak Hill Road in Pulaski County. The National Weather Service confirmed that flooding concerns for southern Kentucky—including Pulaski, Wayne, and McCreary counties—were lifted late Tuesday night after the storms moved out.
Statewide, roughly 20,000 customers lost power at the peak of the storms.. No fatalities were reported, but the NWS plans to survey Pulaski and other counties for possible tornadic activity.
