Kentucky State Police announce safety checkpoints ahead of the Fourth of July weekend

(FOX 56) — This Independence Day, Kentucky State Police is working to ensure Kentuckians are staying safe on the roads.

Officials announced on Wednesday, July 1, that several state police posts are joining Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE) and conducting safety checkpoints ahead of the 4th of July weekend.

“The Independence Day holiday is a time for celebration, but it should also be a time for responsible decision-making,” said KSP Captain Scott Lengle. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead, drive sober, buckle up, and help us ensure everyone arrives home safely.”

According to the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, 91 people were killed in Kentucky crashes involving alcohol in 2025. This accounts for nearly 14% of all traffic fatalities in the Commonwealth last year.

Ahead of the holiday weekend, you can expect to see an influx of troopers on patrol focusing on identifying drivers who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Authorities hope to keep Kentucky drivers safe by reminding community members to:

Choose a designated driver: Decide before you celebrate. Call a friend or use a ride service. Never drive impaired.
Speak up and step In: If someone appears impaired, speak up and help them make the safer choice.
Know when to all it a night: Encourage guests to rest, stay over, or arrange other transportation.
Set a good example: Be the example for those around you by choosing not to drive impaired.

Traffic Safety Checkpoint Locations

“This Fourth of July weekend, KSP is committed to protecting all kentuckians. With your help, we can help ensure that preventable tragedies, like impaired driving, do not happen this Independence Day,” state police wrote in a news release.

Ahead of the festivities, Posts 6, 8, 9, 11, and 14 are releasing the locations of traffic safety checkpoints in their areas. Deputies use these monthly checkpoints to enhance the enforcement of traffic safety laws in Kentucky, including wearing seat belts and driving sober.

Drivers who encounter a traffic safety checkpoint will be requested to present their license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. KSP said drivers with this information readily available and who have not violated any laws should expect a short delay of 30 seconds to one minute.
