(WKYT) – Kentucky State Police say the Critical Incident Response Team has been requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting that happened early Sunday morning.
Troopers say a Paintsville Police officer observed a stolen motorcycle while on patrol. The officer later encountered Shawn Gayheart, 37, of Salyersville, who ran from the officer. The officer caught up to Gayheart, and a physical altercation occurred, troopers say.
KSP says a second officer arrived to assist, and both officers were unsuccessful in getting Gayheart under control. According to KSP, both officers shot Gayheart and immediately rendered aid until EMS arrived.
Troopers say Gayheart was taken to Pikeville Medical Center and is in stable condition.
Investigators say officers found a knife at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
