(WBKO/WKYT) – Kentucky State Treasurer announced a historic milestone with the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division.
Treasurer Mark Metcalf announced said that the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division has surpassed $100 million returned to Kentuckians, setting a new record for the most returned at this point in any administration in Commonwealth history.
“We’re not talking about numbers on a spreadsheet—we’re talking about real money going back to real people,” Treasurer Metcalf said, in a release. “Crossing $100 million means helping Kentuckians pay bills, support their families, and invest back into their communities.”
Unclaimed property includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits, and other financial assets turned over to the state for safekeeping.
In recent weeks, the Treasury has processed claims ranging from a few dollars to tens of thousands.
“We made a decision early on: this money doesn’t belong in government accounts—it belongs in the hands of the people,” Metcalf said. “And we’re going to keep pushing until every possible dollar is returned.”
Metcalf encourages all Kentuckians to check for unclaimed property, noting that significant funds remain available.
“There is still more money out there with someone’s name on it,” he said. “If you’ve never checked, now is the time.”
