(WKYT) – Kentucky senators introduced a bill that aims to expand access to needed prosthetics.
Senate Bill 97 is meant to improve insurance coverage for prosthetic and orthotic devices, according to a news release from the Senate Majority Caucus.
The legislation would establish clearer coverage standards, requiring health benefit plans to provide coverage for devices prescribed by a health care provider for daily living, essential job-related functions, and physical activities such as running or biking.
Kentuckians who rely on prosthetics spoke during a committee meeting, sharing how the devices can improve quality of life, the Senate Majority Caucus said.
A woman who became a quadruple amputee after a severe infection said different devices can be needed for everyday tasks, including showering, cooking, and caring for her family.
“I no longer have the luxury of just being able to use my arms and legs like everyone else,” she told the committee. “Sometimes it takes more than one prosthetic device to safely do the things I used to do every day.”
SB 97 advanced from the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee and now heads to the full Senate.
