(WDRB+WAVE/WKYT) — Gov. Andy Beshear said Sen. Mitch McConnell’s return to Congress is a step in the right direction.
But Beshear believes the senator still has a lot to prove.
McConnell returned to Capitol Hill this week for the first time since he was hospitalized in June. Beshear said McConnell’s showing up each day “is a good thing.”
He hopes the senator makes a full recovery.
“We should be watching over the days and the weeks to come and evaluating the condition he is in and whether he is fit to serve these last couple of months, but we certainly hope that he is,” Beshear said. “We hope that he will continue to improve.”
McConnell released a statement saying he would do his best to be present for tough votes.
He cast the deciding vote Wednesday to pass the farm bill out of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
Democrats oppose the farm bill because it includes changes to the SNAP program that would require states to cover more costs.
The farm bill now faces an uphill battle in the full Senate.
