(WKYT) – One person was taken to the hospital following a collision between a train and a garbage truck in Whitley County on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened on Kentucky Highway 26 near the Rockholds community.
The garbage truck entered the railroad crossing just as the train arrived. The sheriff’s office said there is no crossing gate at the intersection.
The driver of the garbage truck was thrown from it and suffered multiple injuries. They were flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, but their condition is currently unknown.
The train’s conductor and engineer were unharmed.
The train’s cars were empty at the time of the collision, and none of them derailed.
CSX is working to determine if the engine is still operational or if another one needs to be brought in to move the cars along.
Crews are expected to be on scene for about two hours.
