Here’s how you can save money and time at the Kentucky State Fair

(WAVE/WKYT) – Tens of thousands of Kentuckians and visitors are expected to fill the Kentucky Exposition Center in less than two days for the Kentucky State Fair’s food, rides and animals.

Organizers say visitors can make the most of their time and money at the fair with some preparation.

Final preparations are underway for the 122nd Kentucky State Fair. Crews are setting up the last rides, and vendors are putting the final touches on their concession stands.

Ian Cox, with Kentucky Venues, said organizers are expecting visitors from 120 counties.

“Couldn’t be more excited to welcome 120 counties here to celebrate America 250 and also celebrate the pride, the passion, and the pursuits of Kentuckians,” Cox said.

Cox said they expect more than half a million people to attend the fair.

Download the app

Cox recommends downloading the Kentucky State Fair app before arriving.

The app includes daily schedules, a map of the fairgrounds and details on specials.

“Some days have discounted pricing or free admission, depending on certain qualifications. I’d make sure that you get the value that you want out of admission,” Cox said.

Parking and admission

Parking is free with a $12 admission ticket purchased online. Parking purchased at the gate costs an additional $10.

The busiest days tend to be Friday through Sunday.

“Those perimeter lots end up being utilized after noon. So arriving before noon and arriving preferably on weekdays, you’re going to see lesser crowds,” Cox said.

What you can bring — and pay with

Personal checks cannot be cashed at the fair. ATMs are typically located outside the West Hall Lobby, in the South Wing B Lobby, inside Freedom Hall’s front entrance, in Broadbent Arena’s concourse and in the North Wing Lobby.

Purses, backpacks, book bags, water bottles and strollers are permitted. Coolers are prohibited.

Rideshare pickup

The rideshare pickup and drop-off area is located near Gate 1. Signage directs visitors to the designated rideshare zone.

Construction nearby

Construction is ongoing on the other side of the Expo Center property. Organizers said the construction should not impact visitors’ experience at the fair this year.
