Homicide investigation launched after 70-year-old woman found dead

(WKYT) – The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office has launched a homicide investigation after a 70-year-old woman was found dead.

According to a release from the release from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, at about 12:10 a.m., deputies responded to a welfare check on Lower Line Creek Road. Upon arrival, deputies found Sherri Mitko, 70, dead inside the home.

According to a preliminary report, Mitko died from multiple gunshot wounds.

“Tragic situation, obviously. She just lost her husband recently, there was forced entry to the house. And know she is deceased herself,” said Pulaski County Sheriff Bobby Jones.

Neighbors describe Mitko as a “sweet lady” and many are shocked that her home became a crime scene.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is leading the criminal investigation, along with the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says detectives are pursuing several leads and have identified persons of interest.

“We believe it will be more than one person,” said Jones.
