(WKYT) – Parts of Kentucky have received more than 5 inches of rainfall since the beginning of July, and while the wet weather has caused flooding in some areas, a local plant expert says it has also been good for plant growth across the state.
Joe Ellis, cofounder of Sunshine Grow Shop, said the rain has been a welcome development for crops and garden plants alike.
“Well, if you’re a corn farmer, then it’s been great. I’ve not seen corn crop in Kentucky like this in a long, long time,” Ellis said.
‘Responding well’
Ellis said the overcast, rainy days have given plants a break from the heat of summer, which can actually benefit growth.
“Giving the plant a little bit of a break from really hot, intense, long days that we have in the summer, sometimes it’s actually better. You can look at the flowers here and they really are responding well,” Ellis said.
Ellis said he is pleased with the amount of rain the commonwealth has seen and that it has provided plants with a balance of the three things they need to grow.
“Just remember, you need to have water, nutrients, and air and you have to cycle through, so you have to have water, nutrients, and then you have to have a spot of air — water and nutrients and a spot of air,” Ellis said.
