(WYMT) – A Loyall man was arrested Wednesday morning on charges related to drug trafficking and human trafficking following a investigation involving local, state, and federal law enforcement.
Darrell Carnahan was taken into custody by law enforcement and is being held at the Bell County Detention Center. U.S. Marshals arrived on scene to remove Carnahan from his home.
Investigation began with tip
The investigation started in November after a tip was made to the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities worked with local police departments and federal officials before making the arrest Wednesday morning.
Harlan County Sheriff Chris Brewer said the case quickly escalated beyond local jurisdiction.
“As soon as we looked at it, we realized that it was going to be a federal case,” Brewer said. “So we contacted our federal law enforcement partners who we have a great relationship with. They looked at it, they agreed, they took the lead on the investigation at that point. We assisted and it’s been a 6 to 7 month investigation.”
Neighbors describe the arrest
A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, said U.S. Marshals used tactical gear during the arrest.
“Once I saw them get out their tactical gear and guns, I was like, ‘you know, I’m going to go back inside,’” the neighbor said. “They announced on their speaker who they were, nobody come outside, and they ended up breaking in the window and about that time, the suspect came out and arrested him then.”
The neighbor also described the impact Carnahan had on the surrounding area.
“He’s not someone I knew personally, and if I’m being honest, I didn’t go outside a lot because of him,” the neighbor said.
The Harlan County Sheriff’s Department said the case should serve as a reminder for residents to report suspicious activity to keep their neighborhoods safe.
