Opening day of School now under a Month Away

With opening day for the Wayne County School District just under a month away, final preparations are officially underway for the upcoming 2026–2027 academic year.

Students will head back to the classroom on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, marking the end of summer break , keep in mind the district’s free Summer Meal Program, will continue operations thru July 31, 2026.

Families are returning to a school system seeing fresh investments, including an approved 2% salary increase for all certified and classified employees, alongside ongoing summer facility upgrades like the Walker Early Learning Center renovation project.

To ensure a smooth transition back to campus, the Wayne County Health Department is urging parents to beat the local rush by scheduling appointments to finalize mandatory Kentucky Immunization Certificates. Incoming kindergarteners and transfer students must submit an updated immunization form alongside a completed physical exam, while parents of rising sixth-graders and 16-year-olds need to ensure required boosters—including Tdap and meningococcal vaccines—are fully up to date before the first bell rings.
