WKYT) – Kentucky’s Secretary of State Michael Adams announced the launch of a statewide time capsule project to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.
Kentuckians can contribute stories, photographs, artwork and other media to be put in a time capsule that will be opened in 2051 by filling out a submission form.
Adams said when opened, the time capsule will provide “a snapshot” of Kentucky and America, and that Kentuckians are encouraged to participate to help preserve the state’s history.
Some prominent Kentuckians were invited to offer their contributions, including Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Rand Paul and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman. Others who are invited will be announced soon, according to Adams.
University of Kentucky Athletics will also participate in the Kentucky Time Capsule Project, with other partners to be announced.
“Housed in a modified traditional Kentucky bourbon barrel, the time capsule symbolizes both our rich heritage and our shared commitment to the future,” Adams said in a news release. “We hope this project inspires Kentuckians to reflect on their role in democracy and civic life.”
The bourbon barrel time capsule will travel across Kentucky throughout the year.
The first stop will be at Somerset Community College from July 6-19 for their Master Musicians Festival. The barrel will also be at the Kentucky State Fair.
