(WKYT) – A piece of Mammoth Cave and two Kentucky animal specimens will be on display at the Smithsonian as part of the institution’s “Our Shared Future: 250″ initiative.
In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the Smithsonian has a selection of exhibitions “that help tell the American Story,” including “Voice and Votes: Exploring Democracy Across America” and “Much Here is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial.”
A piece of Mammoth Cave will be on display as part of the National Museum of Natural History’s “From These Lands: Sharing Our Natural and Cultural Heritage” exhibit.
The exhibit will feature over 600 specimens and cultural items representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories.
Three items will represent Kentucky, one being a piece of gypsum stalactite from Mammoth Cave.
Mammoth Cave is the world’s lonest known cave system, and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Region, according to the National Park Service.
A ravine salamander and red-legged buprestis specimen will also be featured in the exhibit.
