(WKYT) – If you’ve watched our weather coverage enough, you know we say there is never a good time for severe weather but there is a worst time for severe weather and that is during the overnight hours.

“Most of our population is asleep at night and that’s what makes nighttime severe weather more dangerous than daytime when people are awake and able to pay attention to the risks that are in the area where they are located,” said Drew Chandler, Woodford County EMA director.
Chandler said having the knowledge of what is happening is a key part of being prepared and you can’t do that without a reliable source for alerts.

While we think of tornadoes being the most dangerous form of severe weather, damaging straight line winds can also be very dangerous as well. It’s not something to sleep on.
“We tend to forget that severe thunderstorms can be just as dangerous and a lot of injuries that happen during those more intense wind events, they are related to debris,” said Chandler.
Sometimes damaging winds can be as strong as a weak tornado.
An important thing to note as well is that flash flooding is also a threat with the storms that come through our area. A flood watch is in effect for some of the region.
