(WKYT) – For today’s good question WKYT was asked: Why is the price of gas so different, even in neighboring counties?
For example, in Fayette County the average price for regular gas per gallon is four $4.49.
That’s higher than other counties here in Central Kentucky with Anderson and Boyle counties seeing nearly 30 cent price differences.
Why there is a price difference
There are multiple reasons gas at stations, even across the street, could have different costs.
Looking at the big picture, different regions in the U.S. vary due to factors like distance from refineries and state taxes.
But at the local level, the National Association of Convenience Stores says other factors are at play.
Those can include things like the wholesale cost of gas,, which they say can vary by up to 20 cents depending on how much stations are buying, the brand of gas, and whether the retailer is getting any kind of discount.
The location of the gas station can play a part. If it’s a sought-after area, it can factor into the cost.
Also, is there any competition nearby? Multiple stations near each other may price gas more aggressively. while one that is the only stop for miles can charge more.
