(WYMT) -A Floyd County woman has been missing for two weeks and her family is asking the public for help finding her.
Kayla Reffett’s daughter, Ella Reffett, last heard her mother’s voice March 29 when she came into the home they share around 4:30 a.m. looking for a lighter before walking back outside.
“It’s been 14 days,” Ella Reffett said.
She said her mother somehow made it to a friend’s house and texted her from that friend’s phone the next morning, asking for a ride to her appointment at a nearby methadone clinic. She was unable to take her and no one has heard from her since.
“I looked in her room. None of her stuff is missing. So, it’s just weird,” Ella said.
Reffett said the friend claimed to have taken her mother to the appointment and then asked if she wanted a ride home. But she said the friend told her Kayla declined a ride and said she wanted to walk. So, she was last seen walking from the Allen community.
The family said Reffett has a history of mental illness and substance abuse and they are afraid for her safety. Ella said her mother is diagnosed with bipolar II, which can come with schizophrenic episodes.
“I do believe that she is in a psychosis. I don’t think she is in the right mental state, that the worst could happen,” Ella said. “I’m trying to be hopeful.”
Kayla’s boyfriend, Tyrone Morris, said bouts of running off are not uncommon for her. But, he said, she never goes long without speaking to someone and she did not take her phone. He worries her history will make it harder for anyone to take the search seriously.
He said he is a frequent caller to area law enforcement departments and they are aware of the struggles Reffett faces.
“It got to where I was calling so many times that I think they’re maybe a little lax in finding her because of her mental illness and addiction,” Morris said.
Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt confirmed Reffett is an active missing persons case and encouraged the public to submit any tips about her potential whereabouts.
“Since we filed that it doesn’t seem like anybody’s getting any leads. There’s a person here or there saying they might have seen her. But nobody knows for sure if it was her,” Ella said.
Several tips have reported Kayla was last seen walking toward Jenny Wiley Lake or near Highlands ARH, and some have claimed she went to the hospital. But the family has yet to find a credible lead, so they have gathered a couple of search parties during the last two weeks, hoping to bring Kayla home.
“I’m hoping that she’s alive and well. I pray for that every night, that she’s alive and well,” Morris said.
Tuesday’s search led to no new information, but Ella said they will keep trying until Reffett returns.
Reffett has brown eyes and blonde hair, which she dyes often. She is 5′7″, with several visible tattoos. She has a colorful rose tattoo and the words “Daddy’s Girl” on her right arm; an “E” on one wrist and an “R” on the other; and a nose piercing.
