(WKYT) – Several Kentucky Wildcats traded the hardwood for a night of giving back to the community Monday.
UK men’s basketball players served pizza, chatted with families and signed autographs at the Ronald McDonald House in Lexington.
Sophomore Trent Noah described it as a humbling experience.
“It makes me extremely grateful every time we get to come and hear their stories,” Noah said. “It makes me realize that my problems — and the stuff that I’m going through is slim and not really even that big of a deal at all.”
For the players, it was a chance to step back from basketball and put life into perspective. For the families, it was a break from the daily hospital routine and a reminder they have people like the Wildcats and the rest of Big Blue Nation behind them.
“It’s really just a night to come together to have some time, excite the families and kids and spend time with Big Blue Nation,” said Destiny Oakley, development director at Ronald McDonald House.
Jasper Johnson said the event was meaningful for the team.
“It’s a blessing to be able to talk to them and hear their stories and things like that,” Johnson said. “It always put in perspective that not everybody as good as you are. Just trying to be uplifting and encouraging at all times.”
While many of the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House still have a long journey ahead, nights like this can offer a much-needed break and a reminder they are not alone.
“It’s always good to come out here to meet new people and put your best foot forward,” Johnson said.
