Wayne County’s Fiscal Court met Thursday night for their February meeting. By unanimous vote the court approved a new work program that is modeled much like one that has been in place in Pulaski County for the past few years. Under the program inmates who meet certain criteria would be able to hold a job away from the detention center. The inmate would be dropped off and picked up each day by staff. The American Woodmark Corporation was represented at the meeting and informed magistrates they are willing to use qualified and approved inmates. Either 20% or $55 of what the inmate earns would be given to the Detention center, also any restitution or child support payments would be taken out and the inmate would be able to keep the rest in a bank account established by the Detention Center.
The court received one bid for a fiber to the home project in the Coffey Mountain area, that bid was from Community Telecom Services.
It was noted that the county has already been awarded over $200,000 in grant funding so far in 2025, with other grants having been applied for and various departments waiting for replies.
