COVINGTON, Ky. — Monticello Mayor Kenny Catron’s vision and drive earned him statewide recognition as the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) 2026 Elected City Official of the Year.
KLC and Adams Law presented Catron with the award Thursday night during the 2026 KLC Conference & Expo in Covington. The award recognizes an elected city official who demonstrates outstanding leadership and innovation. An independent panel of judges selects the recipient from nominations submitted from across Kentucky.
Catron took office in 2023 and, according to the nomination, has had what has been deemed a “relentless push for progress.” The entry notes that the mayor often punches above his weight and achieves things that once seemed impossible.
“Mayor Catron understands that a vision is only valuable if you can turn it into action,” said KLC Executive Director/CEO J.D. Chaney. “In a remarkably short period of time, he has built partnerships, pursued opportunities, and secured investments that will have an impact on Monticello for generations. His energy and determination demonstrate the difference an engaged city leader can make.”
Job growth that includes a regional view and leans on tourism has been a big part of his strategy. The city developed a master plan that includes an amphitheater, community center, new parks and trails, and expanded events. Catron also focused on putting vacant lots and underused properties back into productive use and sought infrastructure funding and improvements.
“I feel fortunate that I got to learn from the best,” Catron said, reflecting on his father’s 21 years as mayor. “He worked to bring jobs to Monticello, and when I became mayor, I wanted to do the same thing. I’m grateful for the city officials, legislators, KLC staff and, most importantly, my family who have also helped along the way.”
The nomination called the changes Mayor Catron has brought to the city “generational.” It read: “Good elected officials have an ambitious vision for their term, but great elected officials turn that vision into reality.”
KLC will recognize Mayor Catron at the October 12 Monticello City Council meeting. Adams Law sponsors the KLC Elected City Official of the Year Award and will donate $1,000 to a charity of his choice.
