(WYMT) – As holiday shopping kicks into a new gear, there are some potential crimes to be aware of.
Laurel Co. Sheriff’s Office Public Affairs Officer Gilbert Acciardo said car break-ins are more common during the holiday season.
Acciardo said protecting your items may go beyond locking your car.
“If you do put packages in your vehicle, put it in the trunk or cover it up with a blanket or a coat or something like that where someone walking by can’t look in and see that you got packages in there, and they’ll even break out the window and try to get in if they can see the packages,” said Acciardo.
Porch pirates can also be an issue.
If you decide to shop online, making plans for when the package arrives can save you from trouble.
“You need to make sure if you’re not gonna be home, that someone, a neighbor that you trust or relative can be there, especially if you’re getting a high-end item,” said Acciardo.
Acciardo added having a surveillance camera along with a sign showing you are equipped can help protect you.
