A Wayne County man is dead, and another is behind bars charged with murder following a shooting Tuesday.
At 11:20 AM local emergency response teams were dispatched to the R. Barnett Rd. off Highway 776. 74-year-old Sam White was pronounced deceased, witnesses say the suspect had left the scene.
KSP were dispatched at 11:30 and helped with a search of the area which concluded around 1:00 a short distance away. The suspect was located and taken into custody without incident. The firearm believed to be used was located nearby about 3 pm Tuesday.
66-year-old Willard Upchurch was lodged in the WC Detention Center on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence.
There has been no official statement from law enforcement, unconfirmed reports are that a possible land dispute may have lead to the deadly altercation. The investigation is continuing.
Arraignment for Upchurch has been scheduled for Friday morning in Wayne Circuit Court.
