(WKYT) – Residents in Casey County are still being asked to conserve city water despite recent rainfall that raised a local lake by about a foot, according to Liberty’s mayor.
Bottled water distribution underway
The Casey County VFW Post has been distributing bottled water to help reduce demand on the city’s water supply. Glen Phillips, who is coordinating the effort, said the organization has already handed out more than five tractor trailer loads.
“We’ve got one behind me. One more on the way. 6 more pallets to pick up at Kroger, yeah,” Phillips said.
The next distribution is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday. Phillips said the process is organized with cones and operates on an honesty policy, with a limit of four cases per family.
“We don’t want our city or our county to run out of water. We are trying to distribute water to help people conserve,” Phillips said.
Pipeline project in progress
A pipeline project is also underway to add more treatable water to the lake. An 8,000-foot pipeline is being built from the lake to the Green River and is expected to be completed by next week. Mayor Sam Haddad said when finished, they should be able to pump 300,000 gallons of water per day from the river to the lake for treatment.
The bottled water distribution is expected to continue through the summer and possibly into the fall. Bottled water is being provided by local and regional grocery stores, donations, and other contributions. Residents are asked to conserve city water until further notice.
