(WKYT) – The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association are hosting a flood relief donation drive on Wednesday for families affected by this weekend’s deadly flooding.
Donors can drive up to KHSAA headquarters, located off Executive Drive on Winchester Road, and drop off supplies without leaving their vehicles from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
How the drive works
“All you got to do is pull up. We will get it out of your car,” said Amanda Ramey Masters, KEDC chief corporate strategy and growth officer.
Volunteers have been collecting items including bottled water, paper towels, canned green beans and pasta.
Organizations respond to need
KEDC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Hutchinson said the effort came together quickly after a message from the organization’s executive director Sunday night.
“Sunday night we got a text from our executive director. She is amazing. She’s always thinking about other people and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got to get out there and help our member districts, and let’s do a drive,’” Masters said.
Hutchinson said the organization has a long history of responding to disasters in the region.
“We are usually the first responders to our districts for anything,” Hutchinson said. “We’ve been around for about 65 years. So, we believe in service and our service comes in all types of, you know, forms.”
Hutchinson also noted the area has rallied around flood victims before.
“We did this last time with the floods in Eastern Kentucky and Lexington and the surrounding counties came to their aid. Lexington’s always got a big heart,” Hutchinson said.
KEDC said it will distribute collected donations to flood victims in the districts it serves.
