(WKYT) – Mayor Randall Weddle and challenger Matt Orr will advance to the November general election after finishing as the top two vote-getters in London’s mayoral primary Tuesday, in a race shaped by months of political turmoil.
Unofficial results show Weddle with 922 votes (46%), narrowly ahead of Orr with 911 (45%). Tracie A. Handley, who briefly served as interim mayor after Weddle’s impeachment, finished third with 171 votes (9%).
Weddle, who has been mayor for three years, faced two challengers after the London City Council voted in September to impeach him and install Handley as interim mayor. A judge later overturned the council’s vote, and Weddle returned to office after 24 days.
Orr said the controversy at City Hall motivated him to enter the race, arguing voters are looking for change. Handley sought a full term after her short stint as interim mayor, saying London needs an independent voice.
