The Monticello City Council met in regular session Monday night, much of the meeting was spent in a presentation and discussion on a local tourism board and the AJ Loyd Middle School project.
On a split vote the council approved creating the tourism committee with a director whose salary is estimated to be around $65,000 annually in order to fund the position and receive money for various tourism related projects the council agreed to a 3% restaurant tax on gross receipts from local restaurants, coffee houses, cafeterias, and facilities. The tax will be enacted on June 1st.
The council unanimously agreed to move the AJ Loyd building renovation to the bid stage, it was noted last evening the city would be responsible for paying approximately $800,000 on the project.
Also, the council heard a presentation about a grant to apply for a mobile forensics unit to be used by Monticello Police and could be used the county sheriff’s department. The grant would be for $3,200 with the city pitching in $4,285.
