Citizen’s Police Academy @ Aspire Center

The Monticello Police Department will provide its first-ever Citizens Police Academy beginning June 1st. This will be a comprehensive ten week program covering different topics each week. The CPA will consist of 2-hour classes each Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at The Aspire Center. The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to foster better communication, improve community relations and build strong partnerships between citizens and police officers through education and transparency.

Training topics will include: Patrol, Traffic Stops, Crime Scene Investigation, Illegal Drugs & Investigation, Newly Enacted Legislation, all aspects of District Court, First-Aid/CPR/Narcan, Firearms Safety, TASER demonstration, K-9 demonstration, 911 Operations and more.

In addition to members of the Monticello Police Department conducting training sessions, there will be guest presenters each week. Those already confirmed to present training include Wayne County Coroner Gordon Hicks, Wayne County Attorney Thomas Simmons, Commonwealth Attorney Matthew Leveridge, District Court Judge Scarlett Latham, Monticello-Wayne County 911 Dispatch Supervisor Sara Ellis Shelton and State Senator Max Wise. We are also working to schedule other local and state criminal justice officials for guest presentations. Several topics will include practical exercises with hands-on learning by CPA members.

Graduation for CPA students will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd. CPA Graduates will be well-informed citizens who will possess greater insight into police practices and services as well as the criminal justice system.

Anyone interested in participating in the Citizens Police Academy can download the attached application, completely fill out both pages, and submit it for consideration. Directions on how to submit your application are at the bottom of the second page. Deadline to apply is Friday, May 14, 2021.

  • July 27th – Shark Tank 2 pm Ages 13 to 21 ( in person ) Must Register 
  • July 28th – Story Time 10:30 am Ages 3 to 5 ( in person ) Must Register 
  • July 29th – Shark Party Ages 0- 18 Craft, games, and more! 3 to 5 pm Outside ( In-person) Must Register 
  • July 31st – Jungle Book, Book Club Meeting at 2 pm

Back to School Bash @ Aspire Center
Aug 16 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Defensive Action Against Drugs will join with Wayne County Schools to give school supplies at the Back to School Celebration on Monday, August 16th 5-9pm at the school area. The DAAD Back to School Bash will not be held at the ASPIRE Center, but DAAD will be at the Celebration. More details later from the schools.
