Whitewater Paddlers Flock to Russell Fork During October Releases

October’s scheduled water releases from Flannagan Dam are once again drawing experienced whitewater paddlers to the Russell Fork River in Pike County.

Officials at Breaks Interstate Park say a series of paddling events, including the annual Russell Fork Rendezvous, will attract visitors throughout the month. However, park leaders stress that the river’s challenging Class V rapids are intended only for highly skilled kayakers with the proper training and safety equipment.

Park Superintendent Austin Bradley says the Russell Fork has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s premier whitewater destinations, but it is not suitable for beginners. He noted that accidents and near-drownings have occurred over the years, and even experienced paddlers have encountered serious danger on the river.

Officials encourage kayakers to travel in groups and use the buddy system while on the water. Despite the risks, Bradley says the annual influx of paddlers provides a boost to local tourism and introduces visitors from around the country and around the world to Eastern Kentucky’s scenery and hospitality.

Those not interested in whitewater adventures can still enjoy the region’s peak fall colors and a variety of other outdoor attractions throughout the area.
