Northern Kentucky coroner seeking reelection in 2026 dies

(WXIX/WKYT) – Campbell County Coroner Mark Schweitzer, who was seeking reelection in November 2026, is dead, according to the Kentucky Coroner’s Association.

Schweitzer died Thursday, Oct. 1, due to a fall, the Hamilton County Coroner’s report says. He was 59.

Arrangement are pending at Dobbling, Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Bellevue, KCA wrote online.

Schweitzer was running unopposed for coroner, a position he has held since he was first elected in 1998. For much of his career, he dedicated his life to helping people who are going through the hardest moments in their lives.

“In a job where we are supporting others whose worlds are collapsing around them, we are being tested today to support our own worlds,” the Campbell County Coroner’s Office wrote in a statement. “We will persevere and continue to take on the responsibilities of those who have departed.”

A Campbell County judge or executive will appoint someone to fill the coroner’s vacancy.
