(WYMT) – A Laurel County woman is facing more than 50 criminal charges after Kentucky State Police discovered dozens of animals locked in cages without food or water in “extreme heat” during the weekend.
Ginger C. Smith, 59, was arrested and charged with 23 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals, 23 counts of failing to vaccinate dogs, five counts of second-degree wanton endangerment and one count of second-degree disorderly conduct.
According to Kentucky State Police in London, troopers received a tip on Sept. 5 from Guardians of Rescue, a non-profit animal protection organization, about animals being mistreated at a home on Rydell Road in Corbin.
Responding troopers reported finding several dogs in dilapidated living conditions with no food or water, showing varying signs of declining health.
Troopers obtained a search warrant to access several closed buildings on the property.
Inside, investigators discovered additional animals locked in cages in extreme heat, all lacking access to food or water.
While authorities and volunteers were assisting in removing the animals, Smith arrived at the property.
Police said she drove her vehicle in a careless manner, nearly striking several people at the scene.
