(WKYT) – A bat recently found in Clark County has tested positive for rabies, according to the health department.
The Clark County Health Department said on Monday that the bat was found in the area of Shanahan Lane.
This is the second rabid bat found in Central Kentucky in a month, as one was found in Lexington in June. A rabid skunk was found last week in Scott County.
Rabies is a viral disease that afffects the central nervous system of humans and is usually spread through a bite or scratch. It can be fatal but is also treatable if medical attention is sought quick enough.

Area residents are advised to avoid touching bats and contact animal control or the health department if one gets into their home.
They are also advised to:
- Avoid contact with wild animals;
- Ensure that pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations;
- Supervise pets and do not allow them to roam;
- Report wildlife behaving abnormally;
- Seek medical advice if they or a pet is bitten or scratched by a wild animal.
