(WKYT) – London police captain and former acting police chief Bobby Day resigned his position on Monday morning, citing the political atmosphere in the city government as his reason.
The letter, submitted to London Mayor Tracie Handley by attorney Gregory Ousley, stated that the resignation was effective immediately.
In the letter, Day says he believes that the current political environment has shifted the core mission of the London Police Department away from “public safety and the welfare of the citizens of London.”
It also says that Day has “no intention of becoming a pawn in an ongoing political struggle” and does not want to be caught up in “small-town political drama.’
Thus, stepping down was “the most appropriate course of action for his professional and personal well-being.

Day was appointed acting chief in 2025 following the resignation of former chief Jerry Hollon. He previously served as assistant chief of police.
Gary Mehler was announced as the city’s new acting police chief in January.
The letter states that Day previously served with the Kentucky State Police and assisted in creating the Laurel County School System Police Department.
