50-year-old time capsule excavated in Bardstown

(WAVE) – The people of Bardstown, Kentucky, celebrated America’s independence by unearthing a time capsule that was buried on a significant milestone for the country.

The coffin filled with memorabilia and keepsakes was created in 1976 to mark the bicentennial of the United States.

The daughter of one of the people who originally put it together spoke on Saturday.

“I am proud that my family had a small hand in burying this time capsule, and today my family is honored to be here for the unveiling,” she said. “I am anxiously awaiting to see what treasures my mother left me.”

The time capsules held dozens of old pictures and books, a Coke can from 1976, newspaper clippings from the day the capsule was buried and knick-knacks from eras of history.
