(WAVE/WKYT) – The possibility of jail time still hangs over former Kentucky governor Matt Bevin’s head, as he failed to appear in court for a motion on Monday.
All of this surrounds allegations made by Bevin’s adopted son, Jonah, who claims his parents abused him for years and sent him to live at a boarding school in Jamaica as a teenager.
Jonah Bevin filed a lawsuit for child support he believes he is owed.
At the beginning of June, Matt Bevin was ordered to serve 60 days in jail after he failed to meet the deadline for producing complete financial information.
Bevin’s attorney, Jesse Mudd, argued for a motion of judicial direction. Mudd said Bevin had produced more than 1,000 pages of financial documents. But argued it was not clear how the court would know if Bevin met the requirements.
Jonah Bevin’s attorney said her team isn’t able to come up with a child support calculation based on the documents given.
Judge Angela Johnson commented bluntly and said, “this isn’t rocket science.”
Judge Johnson said months ago, Bevin’s attorney provided an almost fully redacted financial statement and that was not acting in good faith.
Judge Johnson said Matt Bevin’s attorney had ample time to produce needed documents, and if that wasn’t possible, they could have submitted an email to the needed parties to show they’re making an effort.
“This is not about making Matt Bevin go to jail, if he would do what’s right like I require every person that comes here then I would happily rescind that bench warrant. But he needs to do what’s right.” Judge Johnson said.
Judge Johnson denied the motion and said to come ready for their hearing later this month on July 28.
Attorneys involved did not comment following Monday’s developments.
