(WKYT) – Voter registration numbers rose in the last 20 days before the April 20 cutoff before Kentucky’s primary election.
Information released by Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams’ office showed that overall registration rose by 9,833 voters.
Republican registration rose by 3,915 voters. The GOP continues to make up the majority of the state electorate with over 1.61 million voters statewide.
“Other” voters tallied the second-highest total of new registrants with 1,725, bringing that total to 379,997 voters statewide.
Democratic registration rose by 1,168 voters to bring the party’s total to 1.37 million voters statewide.
Adams said his office expects a higher turnout in the May 19 primary due to the bevy of contested offices.
“With hundreds of federal, state, and local races on the primary ballot this May, we are expecting a turnout of about 20%,” said Adams. “Primary turnout typically is 10%-15%.”
