Wayne County Varsity Cardinals scored 9 runs in the fourth inning, which helped them defeat McCreary Central 14-3 on Monday. Riley Jones was struck by a pitch, driving in a run. Nate Criswell drew a walk, scoring one run; Caleb Sargent singled, scoring one run; Gage Gregory singled, scoring one run; Jones tripled, scoring one run; and Dawson Pyles singled, scoring one run.
McCreary Central got on the board in the top of the first inning after Irvin hit a sacrifice fly, and Wayne County Cardinals committed an error, each scoring one run.
McCreary Central added one run in the third. Gabbard doubled down the right field line. making the score 3-0.
The Cardinals flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 5-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Cooper Stockton that drove in two.
Jones earned the win for the Cardinals. The pitcher gave up four hits and three runs ( one earned) over four innings, striking out four and walking three. Egnew took the loss for McCreary Central. The hurler went two innings, allowing five runs ( four earned ) on four hits, striking out none and walking four. Stockton threw one inning of scoreless ball for the Cardinals in relief. The right-handed pitcher surrendered one hit, striking out none and walking none.
Wayne County Varsity Cardinals accumulated 11 hits in the game. Smith, Gregory, Jones, and Sargent each collected two hits. Gregory went 2 for 3 at the plate and led the team with three runs batted in. Connor Hinkle led the Bat Cards with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing eight walks for the game. Wayne County turned one double play in the game.
Irvin and Gabbard were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for McCreary Central. Stephens led McCreary Central with two hits in three at-bats. McCreary Central turned one double play in the game.
The Cards will travel again to McCreary Central on Tuesday for another game.
