(WAVE) – With just two months left before the Kentucky Derby, the field is taking shape.
Churchill Downs’ Senior Communication Director Darren Rogers joined WAVE News Anchor Dawne Gee in studio to talk about the races and contenders leading up to the 152nd Run for the Roses.
“The three-year-olds are coming into much sharper focus this time of year,” Rogers said.
Rogers broke down the three big championship races over the weekend.
In New York with Aquaduct, Iron Honor won the day, but the two other races captured Rogers’ focus.
Rogers described the Fountain of Youth in Florida as “an absolute banger of a race” with Commandment, a horse owned by the ruler of Qatar, and Chief Wallabee, whose trainer is Brad Cox, duking it out, with Chief Wallabee taking the victory.
At Oaklawn Park in the Rebel Stakes, Class President and Silent Tactic were neck and neck at the finish line. Class President was able to hold off Silent Tactic for the win.
Rogers also talked about the upcoming menu for the Derby, which is set to be released on Tuesday, the Woodford Reserve bottle art reveal on Wednesday, and other events in March.
