(WKYT) – Supporters of Doug Harless gathered near Main Street in London on Monday, holding signs and candles to demand accountability in his death, days after a grand jury declined to indict anyone in connection with the case.
The demonstration was organized to keep pressure on the case and ensure the justice system hears their voices, according to organizers.
“This is just us continuing to remember Doug Harless, continuing to show up for Doug Harless and continuing to make sure that they know that we won’t forget — until there is justice we are going to be here,” said Jamie Burns, an organizer of the vigil.
The vigil came hours after Laurel County Judge Executive David Westerfield sent a letter to the FBI requesting an inquiry into whether Harless’ civil rights were violated and whether federal charges could be filed.
Attendees described mixed reactions to recent developments in the case.
“There’s been a lot of highs and lows. There was a real low on Friday. And a good high today. I’m thankful more than anything. I’m thankful that people are saying this deserves a second look,” Burns said.
A friend of Harless who identified himself as William also spoke at the vigil, referencing the emblem of Lady Justice on the front of the Laurel County Courthouse.
“That big emblem on the building — that lady is blindfolded. How can you represent justice when you are blind to what is actually going on,” William said.

Kentucky State Police say Harless was shot and killed in his home by a London police officer on Dec. 23, 2024. KSP says officers were at the home just before midnight to serve a search warrant and that Harless pointed a gun at them.
Dispatch audio later revealed officers may have been at the wrong address.
On Friday, a special prosecutor presented findings to a grand jury, which declined to file an indictment. No criminal charges were filed in the case.
