WC School Board to meet in special Session

The WC School board will meet in special session at noon today to discuss if they will join a social media litigation, and possibly agree to legal services in that litigation.

School boards across Kentucky are increasingly evaluating legal representation agreements to join a massive federal multidistrict litigation targeting major social media corporations.

The legal movement follows a high-profile precedent set by the Breathitt County School District, which secured a landmark $27 million settlement with Meta, TikTok, Snap, and YouTube. The bellwether lawsuit alleged that tech companies intentionally designed addictive platform features—such as infinite scroll and algorithmic feeds—that have fueled a youth mental health crisis and heavily strained public school resources.

While individual school district suits proceed through federal coordination, the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General is simultaneously pursuing a separate state-level lawsuit against Meta alongside dozens of other state attorneys general.

For local school boards, entering into legal services agreements typically involves contingency-fee arrangements with external mass tort firms. Districts are weighing these partnerships as a mechanism to recover financial damages to fund student counseling, behavioral support programs, and mental health resources.
