(WKYT) – The Laurel County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that at least three people have died, and one other is injured after a crash on Somerset Road late Saturday night.
“In a moment’s notice, there were three lives that were gone, and four lives that have been changed forever,” said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
The identities of the deceased were released early Sunday evening; they include: Landon Mullins, 17, of Mt. Vernon, and Duke Weddle, 18, and Elijah Hammons, 18, from London.
The Coroner’s Office also confirmed that a fourth victim, Joseph Cope, 20, of Lexington, was airlifted to UK Hospital.
Deputies say they don’t know how or why the crash happened, but will examine numerous pieces of evidence involving both London City Police and the sheriff’s office.
“We will look at everything,” said Acciardo.” We will be doing toxicoloy, we will also get, it’s kind of like a black box in an airplane, it’s called an EDR, even data recorder. We’ll get a search warrant and and remove that from the vehicle.”
Deputies say the crash scene was deeply troubling for a man.
“One of the investigators told me, this was the most severe crash he had ever seen and he’s been with the department for many, many years.”
